Commissioned by Sally Epstein for a concert on themes by Edvard Munch. Premiered at a concert in her home in Washington, D.C. June 28, 1979 by Isabella Bates, soprano and Stephen Bates, bass clarinet.

This is the first piece in a collection of four in FROM DUSK TO DAWN

The other movements are 'A clear midnight' for soprano and clarinet, where the soprano also plays on cymbals. Text: Walt Whitman.
The third, 'Night Images' (The Jinni) also for soprano playing cymbals and clarinet. Text: vocalise.

The fourth 'Han som vaknade av sång över taken' is for soprano and bass clarinet. Text: Tomas Tranströmer.
