Work comment

The autograph of the piano reduction shows an annotation stating that the work was begun on 15 June, and finished on 6 September, 1928. Movements nos. II and III were composed July-September 1928. The first movement was begun in 1912, worked on at various times 1916-1920, and completed (on the original main ideas) in June 1928.
