The Cantilena was originally intended as no. 2 in a "Suite méridionale" [also called "Spansk serenad" (Spanish Serenade)] (no. 1 = Bolero, and no. 3 = Tarantella, for which there is only a violin part in autograph at the Musik- och teaterbiblioteket) [according to Henrik Karlsson's list of compositions by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (2004)]
