Work comment

The Bilägers musique (= the Royal Nuptials Music), commonly known as the Drottningholm Music (BeRI 2) was composed for and first performed in 1744 in connection with the royal wedding at Drottningholm Palace between the crown prince of Sweden, Adolf Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp and princess Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, sister of Frederick the Great. The ceremony itself took place in the Hall of State on the 18 August, 1744.

The music is a 24-movement suite (with a number of additional movements in reserve) and was performed by the Royal Court Orchestra led by Roman. The suite was doubtlessly divided up into suitable combinations for ceremonies and processions and for performance as concert pieces and mealtime music over the four days that the wedding lasted.
