Work comment

This work was dedicated to French organist and composer Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), who premiered it in 1908 in the Salle Gaveau, Paris.

There are three known autographs, the earliest of which is probably the one at the Musik- och teaterbiblioteket. In a number of ways, it differs from the printed edition.
Another autograph can be found at the Uppsala University Library. Although this version show more similarities with the printed version, they still differ in some respects.
The latest autograph is probably the one in the archive of Wilhelm Hansen, and it is this version on which the printed edition is based.
